How to Choose the Right PPF Installer in Kolkata?

Kolkata’s car detailing market has grown significantly over the past few years. Studios have opened across the city from Salt Lake and New Town to Ballygunge and Jessore Road and almost all of them now offer PPF as a headline service. Some are excellent. Some will take your money and leave you with a film that starts lifting before the next monsoon.

The challenge is that every studio looks broadly similar from a website, uses similar language about ‘premium quality’ and ‘international brands,’ and gives you a number over the phone before you’ve even seen their workspace. The differentiators are almost entirely invisible until you know what to look for.

7 Questions You Must Ask Your PPF Installer Before Paying

Are You a Certified Installer for the Film Brand You’re Quoting?

This is the first and most consequential question on the list. Film brands like Llumar, XPEL, and 3M operate through authorised installer networks for good reason: the manufacturer warranty is only valid when the film is installed by a certified dealer.

An uncertified studio can purchase a roll of branded film through the grey market and install it on your car. If something goes wrong yellowing, peeling, adhesive failure you have no recourse with the manufacturer because the installation wasn’t done through their certified channel. Your warranty exists only on the invoice, not in reality.

A certified installer has completed brand training, uses authentic verified product, and has a direct relationship with the manufacturer for claims. Ask directly: are you a certified installer for this film brand? And ask to see the certification. A legitimate studio will show you without hesitation.

Do You Work in a Climate-Controlled, Enclosed Bay?

This question reveals the installation environment before you’ve seen it. PPF adhesion is sensitive to temperature, humidity, and airborne dust all three of which are challenging in Kolkata, where summer temperatures exceed 40°C and monsoon humidity pushes past 90%.

Dust is the most immediate problem. A single dust particle trapped under a panel-sized piece of PPF is a permanent flaw a visible bump that cannot be removed without peeling and reinstalling the section. Studios that install in open garages or workshops without climate control are producing results that degrade faster and look worse from day one compared to a controlled environment.

A professional PPF bay should be enclosed, temperature-regulated to maintain consistent adhesive activation, and lit properly so the installer can see what they’re doing at panel scale. Ask whether you can see the installation bay before booking. Any studio confident in their setup will say yes.

Do You Use Plotter-Cut Digital Templates or Freehand Cutting?

The way film is cut tells you a great deal about installation quality and risk to your car’s paint. Premium PPF studios use digital plotters pre-loaded with vehicle-specific templates. The film is cut to your exact make, model, and year specification before it touches your car. This eliminates the need for blade work on the paint surface and produces consistent, precise coverage on every panel.

Freehand cutting directly on the paint where the installer uses a blade or scoring knife to trim film that’s already been applied to the panel carries a real risk of scoring the clear coat. Even a skilled freehand cutter occasionally slips. On your car’s bonnet, that’s a permanent mark.

Some installers use knifeless tape as an alternative to blades for edge trimming, which is an acceptable technique in specific situations. What you don’t want is a blade going directly across a painted surface with no barrier. Ask the question, and ask specifically what method they use for hood leading edges and bumper perimeters those are the areas where freehand cutting most commonly happens.

Which Specific Panels Are Included in This Quote?

Coverage terminology is inconsistently used across studios, and it’s one of the most common sources of disappointment after an installation. ‘Full front PPF’ means something very different depending on who you ask.

At a premium studio, full front coverage means the complete bonnet, full front bumper, both front fenders all the way to the door line, side mirrors, headlights, and A-pillars. At a budget studio, it might mean a bonnet strip and a bumper.

Before accepting any quote, ask for a written panel list that names every surface included. A legitimate studio provides this without prompting. Compare panel lists across your quotes, not just total prices a ₹75,000 quote that covers everything is a better value than a ₹55,000 quote that leaves your fenders and A-pillars exposed.

How Do You Handle Edge Termination?

Edge wrapping is the most technically demanding part of a PPF installation and the most revealing indicator of an installer’s skill level. This is also the area where most corner-cutting happens, because it takes time, requires disassembly in some cases, and clients rarely check until the film starts lifting.

A professional installer wraps film edges behind panels tucking the film termination point behind badges, door handles, trim pieces, and into panel gaps so no adhesive edge is ever exposed on a flat paint surface. Exposed edges are where lifting begins, and in Kolkata’s combination of monsoon humidity and summer heat, they begin quickly.

Ask specifically: do you wrap edges or terminate them on the surface? Which panels require trim removal for a proper wrap on my car? What do you do on edges that can’t be physically wrapped? The right answer to the last question involves edge sealant. An installer who can’t answer these questions with specifics is an installer who hasn’t thought about it.

Does the Quote Include Paint Correction and Decontamination?

PPF seals whatever is under it. Put it on over swirl marks, light scratches, water spots, or undecontaminated paint, and those flaws are preserved under your protective film for the next five to ten years.

A proper PPF installation at a premium studio begins with a full decontamination wash, iron fallout removal, clay bar treatment, and depending on the paint condition a machine polish. This preparation stage can add ₹6,000–₹18,000 to the total cost, but it’s not a luxury; it’s what determines whether the end result is excellent or merely adequate.

If a quote makes no mention of preparation, ask directly: is paint correction and decontamination included, or is it an add-on? If the answer is ‘it’s not needed’ without anyone having assessed your paint condition, that’s a red flag. All cars older than twelve months have some degree of contamination and surface marring that should be addressed before PPF application.

Have You Installed PPF on This Specific Car Model Before?

This question sounds simple, but the answer matters more than you’d expect. Trim clip systems, panel gap dimensions, headlight housing geometry, and badge placement vary significantly between models and even between model years of the same car.

An installer who has done your specific car before knows which trim pieces need to come off for proper edge wrapping, which panels are awkward to reach, and where the film is likely to tension unevenly if not handled correctly. An installer encountering your car model for the first time is learning on your vehicle.

Ask directly. If the answer is no, ask how they’ll handle model-specific challenges and whether they’ll do a test section before committing to the full installation. A confident, experienced installer will have a clear answer either way.

Putting It Together

Seven questions sound like a lot for booking a car service. But PPF is a significant investment full front coverage runs ₹40,000–₹1,20,000 depending on film grade and coverage, and a quality installation should last five to ten years. The time spent asking the right questions upfront is nothing compared to the cost of a reinstallation because the first one failed.

The best installers will welcome these questions. They’ve answered them before; they know why they matter, and they’re confident enough in their process to be specific about it. An installer who deflects, gives vague answers, or seems irritated by the questions is telling you something important.

At Prime Car Care, we’ll answer all seven before you’ve finished asking them and we’ll show you the installation bay, the plotter, and a completed vehicle to back it up. If you’re comparing studios in Kolkata, start with a consultation and make your decision with full information.
